The Cooper River Bassmasters hosted their 10th annual Toys for Tots Bass Tournament at the Cypress Gardens Boat Landing in Moncks Corner on Saturday.

The event drew a stacked field of 69 teams, featuring some of the Low Country’s best anglers. Scott Perrine and John Law came out on top with a weight of 16 pounds, 5 ounces.

Perrine and Law made the run to Santee Cooper to fish brush piles, and it paid off in a big way. The pair earned $1,175 for their first place finish. Sid Fowler Sr. landed the big bass of the day, an 8 pound, 7 ounce lunker, that netted him $496 for his efforts. Fowler reported catching the beast on a spinnerbait in the lake.

“We burned a lot of gas and saw a lot of both lakes,” said Perrine. “It was more about the locations than the baits today. We were more or less junk fishing, I think we used four different baits to catch our fish. You’re probably not going to win an event like this if you stay on the river. You just have to swing for the fences and if it works, it works. If not, it’s still for a good cause.”

That good cause was helping children have a happy holiday right here in South Carolina. The event took in a remarkable amount of contributions. With members of the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy on hand to accept the donations, the final tallies were $3,525 cash, 590 toys and 64 bikes.

The tournament has grown from a humble beginning. During the first year of the club’s existence the founding members felt it was important to give back.

“We wanted to do something to help out kids in our community,” explained Ferris Jennings, an original member of the club. “The first year we only had about 30 boats, but fortunately it’s grown every year since.”

The donations have continued to grow each year as well. With a decade of giving under their belts, the club has accumulated figures far more impressive than a 20-pound bag of fish. To date, the Cooper River Bassmasters Toys for Tots Bass Tournament has raised $20,698 in cash donations, 4,613 toys and 250 bikes.

The event, which is a highlight of the local winter fishing schedule, is certainly a reflection of the Low Country fishing community. The club was quick to point out that that it would not be possible to have such success without the help of numerous sponsors and volunteers.

“We never thought it would get this big,” said Jennings. “It’s really grown with the help of the boat dealers. It’s nice that instead of competing against each other, once a year we all come together for the kids.”
